Principal Investigator for Intuitive Buildings and Energy Efficiency



The Energy Dynamics Laboratory (EDL) invites applications for the position of Principal Investigator (PI) in Intuitive Buildings and Energy Efficient Building Technologies.  Candidates must possess recognized expertise in one of the following specialties:
·    Modeling and instrumentation for sensing occupancy, pose and position, and task identification
·    Energy efficient lighting technologies
·    Significant market knowledge and presence in energy efficient building technologies

We seek a candidate who brings an outstanding research and development program or market knowledge directed toward commercialization of new technologies and methods. 

The successful PI will build and lead an R&D and commercialization team with startup funding from the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative (USTAR).  The purpose of USTAR funding is to create new technology-based jobs and economic opportunities in the State of Utah.

The successful PI will maintain a program of extramurally funded research that has national stature.  The PI will identify research and development initiatives with strong commercialization potential and will also contribute to related ongoing projects within EDL.  Other related activities might include security, intent, medical applications, and national security.

Additional responsibilities will include identifying government funding, industrial partners, commercialization, outreach, and identifying opportunity to move developed technologies into new areas.

Minimum Qualifications
·    Advanced degree in a scientific, engineering, or business field related to energy efficiency in commercial and residential buildings.
·    At least 10 years experience in the areas outlined above with demonstrated success in leading programs and attracting funding.
·    Strong reputation and established contacts in one of the following industries:  energy efficient lighting, occupancy sensing and pose estimation, energy efficient construction and building technologies.
·    Record of research and/or business productivity as evidenced by publications, patents, programs, funding, partnerships, and products.
·    Experience in effective leadership of technical and/or business teams.
·    Excellent communication skills with respect to technical presentations and business development.
·    The ability to identify and attract funding and development opportunities, both government and private.
·    Ability to interact effectively with existing national laboratories, government entities, industry, and academia and establish EDL as a major player in energy efficient buildings.

Preferred Qualifications
·    An established research program or industry sponsored programs transferrable to EDL with potential for continued funding.
·    US citizen or resident alien qualified to direct ITAR-regulated programs.
